Every time I make puppy chow, it is a huge hit. Yet somehow, when I make it there’s always people that have never heard of it! This is mind blowing to me given how delicious this is..
To start, all you need is a box of Chex cereal, chocolate chips, peanut butter, nutella (optional), butter, and vanilla extract. Also, to get the wonderful powderyness, powdered sugar!
Put a medium saucepan on very low heat. If the heat is too high, your chocolate will melt and reform in chunky chunks. Not a good look. When I say low heat, I mean like 2 out of 10. Pour in about 2 cups of chocolate chips, a spoon-full or two of peanut butter and/or nutella. When that starts to melt, add about a quarter stick of butter. I didn’t use any butter for my second batch (because I ran out) and it came out fine, so butter can be optional as well.
When this is all melted together, pour in about a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Mix it up.
Now, pour your cereal (one box makes a ton, like enough for ten people, eyeball it and decide how chocolatey you want it) into a large mixing bowl. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the dry Chex cereal and mix it together. Just like when you make rice krispy treats.
Next is the fun part. Pour the cereal and chocolate mixture into a large zip-lock bag. I mean, like a big one. Pour in about a cup or so of powdered sugar. No need to measure, just pour it. Then! You shakey shakey the bag! This makes sure all the pieces are covered with the white goodness.
If you’re making this for a holiday or special occasion, try mixing in fun extras! I mixed in candy corn and m&m’s since I was making it for Halloween. Once when I made it for Christmas, I mixed in red and green candies. Be creative with this, it’s such a fun and delicious treat! I guarantee everyone will love it!
