Two weeks ago, I had this gorgeous succulent bowl in my weekly You Should Probably Know post. I had stumbled upon this beautiful centerpiece scrolling through some home decor sites and just couldn’t stop daydreaming about it. So as soon as I got out of work, I ran to the closet Home Depot on 59th and 3rd Ave and got myself some plants.
I got an array of sizes, colors and shapes to make my garden diverse and interesting looking. (Tip: I got way too carried away with how many plants I really needed. I had about 7 left over. Those $1.97 price points will get you!) I also picked up a large bowl for the plants, I already had soil at home (doesn’t everyone that lives in New York City?). I also grabbed an extension cord and a thermometer, unrelated. Over $100 later…
To start, put on some lipstick and a bright colored tee. Jk, I was already wearing this…..
Scoop some soil into the bowl for a good base. The bowl definitely doesn’t have to be too deep since these guys don’t have crazy roots.
Next, start figuring out where you want to place your plants and start preparing them for the drop in. I dug out little valleys in the soil to place the plants in. Sort of how you do in mashed potatoes for gravy. Drop the plant in it’s place and set some soil around the base of each.
Depending on what kind you get, you might want to wear gloves or something to protect your fingers. This innocent looking round cacti was anything but innocent. Those spikes are just as sharp as they look and my fingers didn’t stand a chance. Especially when I had to take a quick phone call. From my mom.
That’s all there is to it! This is a fun and easy project to put a bit of color into your home without the hassle on maintenance. I water these guys about once a week (twice so far!) and they appear to still be alive!
