Looking back, Chinese New Year has never been something I celebrated or even knew much about. I typically knew it was happening from the calendar alert in my phone and making sure to get orders in before the well deserved multi-week shutdown at the Chinese factories (in reference to my actual job). This year, Chinese New Year is much more special to me as I am experiencing it with my darling boyfriend, who happens to be Chinese.
I am fascinated and so intrigued by the strong cultures of those around me. I’m not saying I don’t have a culture, but I am a mix of about 7 different countries of origin when looking at my family tree, so to say my culture anything more than American would be mostly false.
Yes I celebrate Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and July 4th like most other Americans, but CNY is one holiday I have never celebrated before. Having a boyfriend that was born in Hong Kong, speaks Cantonese fluently and believes in most of the Chinese superstitions (I’m still learning things like to never gift someone a green hat, a wallet without money in it, and to leave the red envelope in his pillow case when I change the sheets), makes learning about the Chinese culture so much more fun! He likes to show me off to his friends like a trick pony and say the Cantonese words he’s taught me including “ice water”, “straw”, “apple”, “left hand”, “airplane”, and of course a few swear words.
This past weekend was the infamous Chinese New Year parade in San Francisco. Though he has never actually been before, he wanted to show me the lion dancers and try some new foods that I’ve ever had before – pineapple buns and egg tarts are my favorite. If you’ve never seen lion dancers before, here’s a link to a short video. They are SO cool; from what I’m told they perform to bring luck and fortune and to scare off evil spirits.
Anyways, here are some snaps from Chinatown and around the city. I got this sweatshirt about two weeks ago and love the print on the sleeves. This outfit is much more typical of what you’ll find me in on the weekends versus a dress and heels, but I do love dressing up!
